Songs for Shabbat Morning
Barukh HaMakom -- literally the Place -- is one of God's many names, indicating that there is no place in the world devoid of God's presence. This name is used especially when God's presence becomes manifest in moments of darkness or trouble, when hope triumphs over despair and love over longing. Just as we say that home is wherever your beloved is found, so too is holiness wherever your heart is open to God.
Since IKAR was born nearly five years ago, we have sought to achieve a holiness that is not dependent only on one physical place but is possible in all places, that is not possible only in moments of ecstatic joy, but is possible in all moments.
Our davening is an attempt to pierce the heart and pierce the heavens. We take seriously the words of the Kotzker Rebbe: Sameness is a sickness. Routine is a paralysis of the spirit. So from old camp favorites to Hillel's midnight musings to obscure Arabic bellydancing tunes, we go where the inspiration is - working to create a davening experience that is rich and spontaneous, comforting and daring. It is a great honor to daven every Shabbes at IKAR with the fabulously talented and deeply spirited Hillel Tigay, Ross Levinson, Jaclyn Beck and Deb Brous, and with Penina Podwol, Rabbi Scott Perlo, Lizzi Heydemann, Jonathan Bubis, Akiva Potok and others who dedicate so much heart and soul to our community's experience of the sacred.
I pray that this music will inspire a sense of hope and possibility, revealing a holiness that persists even in the darkest moments and a sense of mystery that permeates all time and space.
