LIMUDIM CURRICULUM
LIMUDIM REVITALIZED STRUCTURE
Our Basic Program: Grades 1-6
- Havurah (small group) Tuesdays - Students will meet in a central location the first, second, third and sometimes fourth Tuesday of every month for an age-based educational experience.
- Sof ha'hodesh (end of the month) - On the last Tuesday of every month, all Limudim students will have an experience-based learning opportunity. In addition to geographically convenient home-based programs, Sof ha'hodesh will also include field trips and holiday-related activities. Location will vary.
- Shabbat (Saturday AM) Limudim - Limudim will meet during the second and fourth Shabbat of every month (with IKAR community). The second Shabbat of every month will feature Limudim programming, as well as participation in the IKAR community Shabbat service (will vary by grade). The fourth Shabbat will feature a family service/learner's service, followed by brunch with the entire IKAR community. To be held at IKAR (Westside JCC).
- Shabbaton & Day-Long Retreats - There will be one Shabbaton with the IKAR community and two day-long retreats for Limudim students and their families. See calendar for specific dates. To be held at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute.
- Tikkun Sundays: Action and Advocacy Brunches - On the third Sunday of almost every month (see calendar), Limudim will have an Action and Advocacy Family Brunch that will feature both learning and doing. After learning about a particular mitzvah topic, families will have an opportunity to perform an action related to the topic (e.g. learning about bikkur holim and then making baskets to deliver to hospitalized children). Limudim students and families will be asked to attend at least three brunches. Location will vary.
- Holiday Celebrations - Limudim students will be invited to participate in all IKAR community holiday programming. Special programming will be available for Limudim students at all holiday celebrations. To be held at IKAR (Westside JCC).
Kindergarten & Premudim
The program for kindergarten is based on the framework for grades 1-6, with the exception that there is no weekly havurah style learning. Kindergarten-aged students and premudim children will be invited to participate in Sof ha'hodesh.
B'nai Mitzvah/Grade 7
In addition to the requirements for students in grades 1-6, b'nai mitzvah students will spend one additional hour on Tuesdays (6PM-7PM) in b'nai mitzvah preparation. Additionally, each bar/bat mitzvah student should be prepared to:- Work with the Limudim staff to complete a special social justice project based on his/her personal interests and concerns.
- Study with a private tutor for approximately eight months prior to his/her Bar/Bat Mitzvah
- Each family will also receive a b'nai mitzvah booklet which details and clarifies Limudim's philosophy, approach, timeline and requirements for our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students.
Post B'nai Mitzvah
In addition to the Shabbaton, the two retreats, the action and advocacy brunches and the holiday celebrations, the post b'nai mitzvah program will also include:
- Shabbat (Saturday AM) Limudim - Post b'nai mitzvah students will be invited to join the greater IKAR community for Shabbat services or to serve as teacher assistants in Limudim classrooms. To be held at IKAR (Westside JCC).
- Havurah Tuesday Elective Courses - Students will meet in a central location and learn based on four six-week elective courses. There will be one course offered every six weeks and students will be strongly encouraged to register for all four six-week courses. Each course will be taught by a different specialist and course electives will largely be determined by the interest and needs of the students. On the last Tuesday of every month, the post b'nai mitzvah students will be invited to participate in Sof haHodesh with the Limudim community.
- Post b'nai mitzvah students will also have the opportunity to participate in our once a month teen program that is currently being developed by IKAR community members.
